Support Your Children as they Prepare for their Future

Support Your Children as they Prepare for their Future The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseChildren grow up so fast that it can be hard to see where all the time has gone, but whilst your children are growing into teenagers and adults there are many ways in which you can and should be supporting them. The future is always uncertain and that can make it difficult for you to realise how you can support your kids. By reading this article, you will understand how you can prepare your children for an uncertain future.

Applications

One of the most stressful times for your children as they grow into young adults will be applying to colleges, sixth forms and universities. At this very uncertain time in your child’s life, there are some steps that you can take to help them prepare.

Ensure that your children have researched the higher education institution that they are applying for, and make sure that you have taken them to visit the institution in person so that they can feel the atmosphere and meet potential peers and teachers.

As well as this, your children will be highly appreciative if you offer them help with the actual application, which usually includes a CV. If you’re unsure on how CVs work, LiveCareer has a wonderful CV builder which you can utilise to ensure that all important information is included and give your children the best chances that they can get.

Teach ‘Adult’ Tasks

There are some essential things in life that your children will not be taught in school which you should be willing and able to teach them, most importantly tasks which are classified as ‘adult tasks’. This includes simple household chores such as putting the washing machine or dish washer on, but can also range to more difficult tasks which will be essential in their future, such as paying tax and bills.

Support Your Children as they Prepare for their Future The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseYou don’t need to sit your children down and tell them step by step how everything must be done, it’s far better to show not tell as it is far better for them to learn by experience. This means going about your daily chores but informing and showing your children what you are doing, such as how you are loading the dish washer.

Teach Them Responsible Use of Money

Teaching your children how to handle money responsibly is one of the best ways of nurturing responsible adults. Budgeting and responsible borrowing are essential skills that every adult needs to learn. Teach them that money doesn’t grow on trees and so they must try to live within their means. If that means having fewer nice things, then so be it!

While it’s important to stress the importance of budgeting, it’s good to let your children know that most of us will need to borrow money at some point in our adult lives.

Whether this is borrowing from friends or family, using a credit card or taking out a personal loan, it’s important they know how to do so responsibly. Say that you should only ever borrow money that you can afford to pay back and, if borrowing from a bank or loan provider, it’s imperative that they make repayments on time to avoid their credit score being negatively impacted. The last thing they will want as young adults is to get themselves into debt they can’t repay

Resilience is Key

It’s a hard reality, but not everything in life is going to work out how we want it to – your children might not get into the college or university they want, they might not do well in their exams or they might fall out with people that they once were close with. It’s a hard pill to swallow but it is likely that these things will happen and your children should be as prepared as they can possibly be.

The ability to bounce back from disappointment, or resilience, is one of the key skills that your children need to gain. Let your children know that it’s okay to fail, don’t tell them that the world is going to end if they don’t get a certain grade, no matter how high your expectations, and most importantly, let them know that you will support them no matter what.

Support Your Children as they Prepare for their Future The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseIt can be difficult to watch our children grow, but even more difficult to watch them struggle due to a lack of preparation for adult life. Make sure that your children are as prepared as possible to ensure that they get the most out of their adult life.
