Camping can be a great family holiday. Camping can be much cheaper than other holidays, leaving you with more money for day trips while you’re away. It’s also a great way to get your kids into the great outdoors. However, a campervan with young children can be a challenge, thanks to lack of space. Here’s how to survive in a campervan with kids.
Pack Light
Packing light with kids can be a challenge. However, even a roomy van, like used Volkswagen campervans, have a limited amount of storage space available so you have to plan your packing carefully. Make sure you’re prepared for bad weather with raincoats, wellies, and warm jumpers. Take shorts for warm weather, and some sturdy walking shoes if you’ll be outside a lot. Take clothes that can do double duty, by being layered when it’s cooler or turned up when it’s warmer. Many campsites have laundry facilities available, so take some washing tablets and a mini washing line, so you can pack fewer clothes and wash what you have while you’re away.
Research First
It’s important to find a campsite with good facilities for kids. A local shop is handy to have nearby for buying any supplies. To keep the kids busy while you’re on the site, pools, parks and games rooms are popular. To make things easier you, look for sites with family bathrooms. You want a site that is safe and well equipped for families.
Look for a site that has local attractions nearby that you can walk to on foot. There’s nothing more annoying than setting up camp and then having to drive the campervan somewhere else every day. A good coffee shop, breakfast spot, and local shops are useful to have nearby. Look for attractions like a beach in walking distance to save you having to make trips every day.
Take A Pop-Up Tent
Why do you need a tent if you have a campervan? A pop-up tent can actually be a very useful place to store bulky items that you don’t need all the time, like the kids’ car seats, pushchairs and outdoor toys. These items take up a lot of room in the van. You can transport them to the campsite in the van, and then get them out of the way when you set up camp, by moving them out into the pop-up tent to free up floor space in the van.
Take A Large Bag
Large foldable bags, such as the famous blue ones from a certain popular Swedish furniture store, are very useful to have on camping trips. They pack down small so they can be stored out of the way, but are also ideal for transporting things like laundry, wet swimwear, muddy shoes, and wet towels. These bags are also easy to clean after you’ve used them.
You can have a great family holiday in a campervan, even with small children, if you do some preparation and research first. Pack smartly and you’ll have a wonderful time.
