As a family we are massive lovers of the Yorkshire Coast and what’s not to love! In fact we loved it that much we eloped and married in Whitby on the coast back in 2012. There are some amazing places to visit on the Yorkshire Coast and we are aiming to visit each and every one.
Since getting together well over a decade ago Ollie and I have had some amazing breaks away in this area of the UK and we aim to visit at least once a year. This year with things so up in the air and COVID restrictions coming in thick and fast we genuinely thought we would have to miss our Yorkshire coast trip this year.
However, after the most horrific family holiday in the summer in North Wales (due to the venue we stayed at) we decided that if COVID didn’t lock us down for the half term then we were going to get away to one of our much loved areas.
Since having the boys our trips around the Yorkshire coast have been varied and with so many Haven sites in the Yorkshire area all offering something slightly different we decided to visit Reighton Sands with its direct beach access so we could aim to stay near the beach and fresh air.
Becoming COVID secure means there were some major changes to the way check in occurs on Haven sites and I am thrilled to say that this year was the first year in a decade I did not dread the manic check in queues!
We were sent details of our caravan the day before along with a map so we knew where our van was located. When we arrived on site we were greeted at the gate and the member of staff told us again where we were and gave some straightforward directions.

We were booked into 13 Beech Rise and it was a beauty. The caravan was immaculately clean and was well fitted out with a bigger than normal fridge and a super comfy bed!
The site was fairly quiet but with Nottinghamshire being on half term earlier than the rest of the UK we knew it would be super quiet. We were given the chance to upgrade our holiday and pay extra to use the swimming pool and entertainment. But we opted not too as we were wanting to keep away from other people as much as possible during our break away.
Before heading to our caravan on the day we got chance to blow away the cobwebs by heading into Filey with my in laws who were we booked to stay at an apartment down the road.

We squeezed in some fish and chips and then took a wonder on the beach with the boys. It was a perfect way to start our break away.

For the Tuesday we decided to spend as much time as possible not driving and being outdoors so we all headed down to the beach from the beach path on site and took some chairs for the day to get comfy.
There is a super steep hill for the direct beach access. Although through high season there is a land train that can take you down and bring you back. Instead we got my husband a trolley to carry down the chairs. It was a rubbish job but he did is so well he did it on the way back too!
Before going for this break away I ordered some kites for the kids as this is something we hadn’t done it before. Jacob took to kite flying well and got the gist so much so he was like a little pro flying it up and down the beach.
Joshua however really struggled and to make it worse his dropped in a rock pool of water and so water logged it became all most impossible to fly.
Thankfully Jacob gave his too Joshua for a while and swapped which allowed Joshua to crack kite flying.
My Mother in law brought some snacks and with drinks there too we whiled away some lovely hours in the blustery wind, flying kits, laughing and making memories.
Play Parks
Reighton Sand has play parks dotted around the site and once nearest to where we were staying was in fantastic condition and had some lovely pieces of equipment on.

The boys visited the park several times and loved it each time.

COVID Secure
We have always been a little anxious about the places we might visit while going out due to the COVID-19 pandemic but we have been trying to research the places we visit prior to going to make sure we can remain as safe as possible and I have to say with the new check in procedure, the level of cleanliness in the caravan we had along with the check out procedure that includes bagging bedding before leaving and then key drop offs at the gate have been super.
This break away was exactly what we were looking for with limited if no direct contact and with just booking a hideaway break it meant we were also not paying for parts of the break we didn’t want. As a family we are never eager for all the evening family entertainment or day time kids activities as we often go away for spending time together so it was great to stay at Reighton Sands and make it a total fresh air break.
Getting away and spending time as a family really was what we needed.
