What to do on a day trip to York with kids

What to do on a day trip to York with kids The Oliver\\\'s MadhouseIf you are planning a day trip with your family, heading to York could be the perfect place – not only is the city full of history and gorgeous walks but there is plenty for the kids to do too. Here are a few things you might find yourself getting up to if you head to the beautiful city for a day (or two)!

How to get to York

Getting to York is easy as it has great public transport links. If you are travelling with kids, your best option is to look for trains to York as they are much more convenient than buses and negate the need to pay extortionate city centre parking prices.

Travelling by train with children can also be cost-effective in that many train lines offer free travel for children under 5, and those under 15 will usually be able to get a 50% discount on most tickets.

Walks

If you arrive in York and are greeted by lovely weather then you should make the most of it by embarking on one of the city’s many walking trails. The city walls are an obvious favourite for visitors and locals alike. The two-mile-long walk is full of history, with some parts of it dating back to the Romans almost 2000 years ago. As one of the best remaining medieval city walls in the country, it is a must-see!

This unique walk involves finding 20 cat statues hidden around the city centre and will only take around an hour but can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors and see more of the city.

York’s Chocolate Story

Uncover York’s chocolate history and take a guided tour through the history of York’s most famous chocolate-making families and their creations. You will get to create-hand made chocolates for yourself and then watch how the experts do it, with the opportunity to purchase some of the tasty treats after your visit – nothing like a sugar rush for the little ones!

York Maze

For an amazing day out, York Maze is the place to go. The Maize Maze is the largest in Europe and has a new design each year and is home to over 20 rides, attractions and shows to keep you all entertained. Many of the attractions are undercover too which makes it perfect for a trip any time of year.

The Ghost Bus Tour

For kids aged 4+, The Ghost Bus tour is the UK’s only comedy-horror theatre tour and is a brilliant way to learn the history of the ‘most haunted city in the world’. The tour lasts around an hour and a half and is full of dark and hilarious history. You will visit infamous spots such as the grave of the highwayman and killer Dick Turpin, as well as supernatural hives like York Minster and Treasurer House. If you feel like you and your children are up to it then it’s not to be missed!
