If you have young children and you are looking to do your very best to keep them happy and healthy, as most of us parents are, then one thing you should think about is buying your child a bike (if they do not already have one) and encouraging them to get cycling.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But what about the scraped knees, the wobbly starts, the ‘mum, I can’t do it!’ cries?” That’s a fair worry, but the benefits of cycling for your little ones fast outweigh the worries you might have, as you will see below:
- It’s fun on wheels
First off, cycling is just pure, unadulterated fun for your average little one. They love feeling the wind in their hair and the speed at which they can travel once they’ve mastered the basics, and they’ll love it even more if you travel along with them, so why not invest in a couple of BMX bikes or a city bike each and get out on the road? They’ll feel so triumphant once they have the hang of it all!
- The great outdoors is calling
When your kids can cycle, then it can be much easier for you to enjoy the great outdoors as a family, Getting plenty of fresh air and sunshine is so important for people of all ages, but especially growing children, so when you can all head out to the local beauty spot and explore, not from inside a car, but on your bikes, you will all benefit. Just don’t forget the sunscreen; nobody wants a lobster-red little cyclist!

- Healthy habits are made young
The younger your children are when healthy habits are formed, the more likely it is they will stick to them, and there is no denying that cycling is one of the healthiest forms of exercise there is, as well as being one of the most enjoyable, which again, will make it more likely they’ll stick with it as they get older.
- It’s great for co-ordination
One thing that young children need to learn is balance and co-ordination, and it is fair to say that learning how to ride their first bike will help them immensely with this, which is just another reason you should all get on your bikes while the kids are still young.
- Independence days
When your child has their own bike and can ride it safely and effectively, ad they get older, it will give them more independence. They will not always need to rely on you to drive them to school or their friend’s home around the corner because they will be able to cycle the journey in no time at all. The longer they have been doing it, the more confident you will be in letting them spread their wings a bit and make their own way.
So there you have it – learning to cycle is a great skill for any child to have and it will help you out as a parent too, so time to strap on that helmet and get going!
