*Feature With Great British Racing*
If you have followed our adventures at Southwell Races this summer and Joshua’s first riding lesson you will know that we were working with Great British Racing to celebrate the great Under 18’s Race Free’ campaign
The campaign is based on allowing children to race events all around the UK and with lots of dedicated family days there has been lots of fun to be had.
Although my official work with Great British Racing has come to an end a little while ago we had such an amazing time at Thirsk Races in Yorkshire I really wanted to share what we got up too.
Neither Ollie nor myself had been to Thirsk races so we were excited from the moment we arrived. With parking in a field directly opposite and well managed there was no big dramas to get the car parked and with some super helpful staff on the gates we were soon through and exploring.
The family event we attended was themed on pirates and with a Caribbean steel band playing in one end of the course we meandered round to the family end of the building and the first spot was a well equipped children’s play park that both kids loved.
I loved the layout of the venue with eateries dotted around the complex it meant we didn’t notice any massive queuing and it was super calm even though it was busy and even better was that there was lots of choice! On this occasion we we decided to take a picnic but next time we soundly bother to be honest.
There were some super things for the kids to do with a gigantic inflatable pirate ship for the kids to bounce on for free and a free coconut shy to let the kids let off some steam with!
The one thing we did notice and kick ourselves with was the fantastic option to park next to the track and so you can picnic from your boot! – how cool is that! Instead during the races we went high into the stands and cheered like nutters!
We had a really long drive to get there so hadn’t intended to stay till the last race but had said around 4-4.30 we were going to leave so with no winners in sight for us we put a couple of bets on our last race and we came in with a winner with scuzeme and then our other bet came in second! Because we only bet a few pounds our winnings were around £14 but do you know what none of us cared it was a great feeling to win and the kids went nuts when our horse crossed the finishing line!
We had the fabulous afternoon and we have promised ourselves we will go back.
Have you ever been to Thirsk Races?
